It’s another year of beautiful people celebrating a beautiful day with beautiful food. We love to party and create that special day for you. Whether it is a Birthday, Engagement, Wedding day, Anniversary, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th,90th Birthday, … Continue reading
We love a great cup of tea here at Vintage Rose Catering. Depending on what you are eating should determine which blend and flavour of tea you drink, just like a good wine with a certain meal.
We can advice our guests what type of tea to drink with their afternoon tea if they wish.
Here is our simple guide based on the last 8 years of serving teas
To accompany our Lemon drizzle, Citrus loaf cakes, Orange cakes and all citrus bakes we usually choose Earl grey – a delicious blend of Bergamot and citrus undertones, it enhances every mouthful.
Whereas if you were enjoying a plain sponge say a madeira cake or an American pound cake a Darjeeling would be nice or a Breakfast blend.
Our afternoon tea blend is lovely alongside our carrot cakes or anything frosted and creamy based.
We stock over 15 regular teas and invite our visitors to taste these during their afternoon tea experience. As with a lot of things we often stick to a favourite but this is a great way of tasting new blends and enjoying ones that you wouldn’t necessarily have purchased before.

To create the perfect vintage wedding you have to introduce the following into your day.
Photographs from last weeks Vintage Wedding of Paul Larkins and Jenny Donnelly.
Lots of pretty personalised items that reflect your hobbies or interests
Little hearts filled with tea, gift tagged with guests names on ensuring each person gets the correct place at the table, behind the cup a little favour box filled with a surprise! Jenny is so creative and with help from friends and family made the divine teabags and favour boxes.
These table numbers were embroidered by the bride and looked beautiful on our vintage embroidered tablecloths.
We made our own strawberry preserve, jam pot covers and labels to tie in with homespun decorations.
Lots of lovely vintage china and accessories are vital for adding that vintage elegance to any celebration. Vintage china adds that quintessential elegance to your day and we think tea certainly tastes better sipped from delicate china. Our range of teapots, sugar bowls and milk jugs add to the pleasure and art of taking tea.
Table linens especially vintage embroidered ones look very special
We have lace, embroidered, retro and plain cloths for all themes.
Here are some hanging out to dry.
Our napkins and cutlery can complete the table setting with lots of mis-matched, but co-ordinating colours we bring the whole look together. We can supply linen or paper napkins in a variety of colours and fabrics.
Next you need to arrange your catering, whether your venue supplies this or you bring in an outside caterer choose your menu to reflect your guests and the season. An afternoon tea style wedding can save your budget and allow you to create a bespoke menu of your own; if you use a company that can provide the vintage china and all of the catering with service you get a complete service instead of booking several companies to do bits on the day everything will be arranged saving you time, stress and money.
Bringing in the catering.

Plenty of tea at the ready. We supply a wide range of teas and speciality coffees with service on the day.
After the meal get guests to type a little message to the happy couple for keeps
Guest having a great day
And Finally and the most important point to us is:
With Thanks and special wishes to the beautiful couple Paul and Jenny
Jenny looked like a Film star and made this fabulous dress herself!! Paul looked fab too
We hope they will be truly happy forever xxx
Last week, We had the privilege of bringing our Vintage wedding catering and equipment to the wedding of Jenny Donnelly and Paul Larkins. We had the first of our wedding consultations with the bride and groom, last year and it was obvious from the start that this would be a very personalised and creative wedding as Jenny, the bride is extremely talented, sewing her own clothes and creating gifts from up-cycled fabrics and buttons. Paul, hubby is a professional photographer and runs his own company and so with their combined love of vintage we set about planning what to make, that would add more vintage input to their day.
I commissioned a lovely piece of button art designed and made by local artist Emma as a gift for the couple. I love the work by Emma and as Jenny mentioned she was going to include buttons in her theme it was an obvious choice for me.
Next we discussed the wedding afternoon tea and as the couple wanted a vegetarian tea we all agreed on the following menu
Earl Grey Tea
Sandwiches of:
Herb and cream cheese
French Brie and Cranberry
Avocado on seeded bread
Roasted garlic, beetroot and feta on spelt bread pizza
Scones, clotted cream and our strawberry preserves
Earl grey and lemon ‘button’ teapot biscuits
A variety of our fruit frangipane’s
A selection of our home-made cakes from our boutique bakery
All to be served on our vintage china, table linens, napkins, cake stands and vintage cutlery.
We created little menu cards with dried lavender and rose clips with hanging tags, these were hand written on cath kidston cards.
The venue was at the beautifully restored Springfield Hall, Sandiacres.
A unique venue hidden for the past 50 years and now beautifully decorated in a neutral colour that lends well to any celebration. Situated next to the canal this adds to the photographic opportunities and allows a lovely area for guests to spill out to on a warm evening.
We started sewing even more bunting to fit the inside and outside of the hall. In co-ordinating colourways to blend in with our extensive collection of 200 vintage china teacups and saucers and accessories, we excitingly got out the vintage singer sewing machine and gave ‘Suzy’ a good run with the fabric
Over three hundred feet of bunting was sewn and we thank Ashley at Springfield hall for getting up on the ladders to put it all up!
See our next blog for lots more photographs of the day

We offer a full complete service including dressing the venue with bunting; stylish table settings; beautiful china and of course all our delicious home-made produce. As we can offer all these services including service if required, you can rest assured everything will be taken care of, allowing you to relax and enjoy the day without all the work!
It is a great fun and enjoyable job, We love creating your special event and feel each booking is so special, so enjoyable, it does not feel like work!
We often do not know what space we have to dress, as clients can book holidays in Derbyshire and The Peak District and are unsure of the space available. This is fine, we have dressed large buildings and small, we even set up on a kitchen work surfaces and put all the tea cups and china on a lovely window seat; this is the challenge, but when you have beautiful china whatever space you have it all looks so pretty and lovely when we have finished! We travel to holiday cottages, lodges, hotels, village halls, people’s houses, even vacant barns and outbuildings. We particularly love the ‘Surprise’ events we create, all the friends and family know, but the person(s) celebrating their birthday, engagement, hen party, anniversary or other event has/have no idea what is about to happen and the look on their faces of sheer delight and surprise is great for us to see. Often we have to set up, style and display all the food then leave and we miss that experience which is a shame, but on the occasions where we do stay, we are so happy to see the reactions when the person(s) returns! This happened last weekend when we took our afternoon tea parties to Center Parcs and set up the outside and inside of the lodge. Sue, the ‘Hen’ had joined her friends and family for the Hen weekend and half of the party had gone for a walk, then returned to find our surprise tea party! Sue will be getting married in less than 3 weeks now. We wish her and her partner the very best. Here are a few photographs of the day
To buy or not to buy – Vintage china?
Hiring vintage china by Vintage Rose Catering
Whatever type of wedding you have chosen, vintage china can enhance the table display and make for a memorable day. If you have decided that your wedding theme includes vintage china you need to choose between buying or hiring a large quantity. When looking to buy vintage china you need to have lots of available time to seek out the china tea sets from places like vintage shops, antique fairs, vintage fairs, auction houses, car boot sales and charity shops. It will take a lot of time to find huge quantities and you need to focus on the colours you require and set out to get a collection in similar colour-ways or designs to suit your theme. It is not guaranteed that you will find exactly what you are looking for so be flexible in your choices. Expect to pay anywhere from £5 – £15 depending on the make of the pottery for a set of tea-cup, saucer and plate. If you have a large wedding party of 100 – 150 guests this will cost a lot. You will need to consider sandwich plates, cakes stands, sugar bowls, jugs and teapots too. Expect around £600 – £1000.00 for this budget depending on your wedding party numbers. Examine all pieces very carefully as aged items often suffer wear and tear but this is part of the charm, but do not purchase any items that are chipped or cracked, some sets will have missing items so miss and match to disguise this. You will need to re sell the items afterwards which again will take time and effort or why not donate them to your favourite charity.
If you choose to hire the items you will save time in searching for everything, save money on the whole cost of buying everything – here at Vintage Rose Catering, we offer great package deals on wedding hire which saves money and can deliver, set up the tables with the china at a small charge and take everything away dirty saving time on washing up as most hotels and venues will not wash these delicate items for fear of breakages. Every hire company will charge for damages so check their hire terms and conditions before booking. Please also ask for styling charges this is a useful option to take saving time but also more importantly let you see the final table display and enables for changes beforehand in plenty of time.
So hopefully you have chosen which option you will take and have a beautiful table display enhanced by delicate vintage china above all have a beautiful wedding whatever the theme. Please take a look at our wedding pages and other services on our website
You’ve told the family and now its time to send out the news to everyone you cannot visit and tell straight away that’s when the wedding announcement cards offer a great way of spreading the news. Announcement cards offer you a great way of creating the theme of your wedding and letting people ahead know of the style your wedding will take. Through the colour or theme of your card. Think colours, your style and mediums.
There are so many charming invites available and so many styles to choose from. If you visit craft fairs, wedding fairs and local craft markets you will hopefully see local designers and crafts people showcasing their designs and invitations. This is a great opportunity to discuss with the artists and makers the style you would like and to determine all possibilities to customise your cards.
Choosing a theme – there are hundreds of possibilities including vintage, modern, mono-block, colour themed, ribbon tied, or different folded styles. There are many types of medium to choose from traditional card to hand sewn material notices, laced or binding covered fabric cards.
Have a good look on the internet to see what inspiration and fashion choices are out there but above all choose a style that reflects the bride and groom. If you love surfing in Cornwall why not choose a design that includes a surf board or something more relative. It’s whatever floats your boat or board!
The Wording: There are traditional and modern ways to spread the word. Examples could include:
Mr B Jones & Miss T Radbury.
The engagement is announced between Barry, eldest son of Mr & Mrs Paul Jones of Barlborough, Sheffield and Tina, Youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs Martin Radbury of Newbold, Chesterfield.
Or a modern style could be
Barry & Tina are tying the knot!!
Dates: 29 August 2013
Have lots of fun.
Wedding Guide: Part one tips on the engagement and engagement party
You’ve made your decision it’s time to pop the question. How it’s done is down to the couple themselves, however, we offer our romantic picnics which are a lovely way to create a romantic scene and crack open the bubbly when the answer is Yes!
Announcing the engagement is a huge step in a couple’s life. Telling the family first, then your best friends, in person, then maybe an engagement announcement card to everyone else. This often results in a frenzy of everyone you know wishing to spend some time with you to talk about your future plans this may be a good time to arrange an engagement party. Getting everyone together to celebrate the forthcoming event will offer you the chance to talk about it to everyone at once, but more importantly, giving everyone the chance to meet with each other before the wedding.
Often nowadays the bride and groom come from different parts of the country and so the families have never met before. It will be so much easier for everyone, if they meet up before the wedding and therefore know who is who!
It is customary for the brides mother to write to the grooms parents to express their happiness at the future marriage. Details such as locations, dates, numbers of guests, venues, budgets will be a good thing to discuss amongst both families.
The engagement party is a great excuse for a family to get to know each other and friends and family will want to see the couple in person to show their excitement at their news. You need to invite the guests to the engagement party who will also be invited to the wedding. many guests will want to bring an engagement gift and may ask what your wedding list is so try to get together and make a short list, so you can let people know what you would like.
Local department stores usually offer a wedding list service and will add your engagement details and which gifts you would like to the list. You may wish to ask people to donate money to a charity for an engagement gift, so look into the details in advance before your guests ask you!
Remember to send out Thank you cards to all your guests for coming to the party and for any gifts you receive.
In our next Wedding guide part two we will talk about finances and planning for the big day
